Okay! Zoni ! Or anyone who wants to chime in =) How would you suggest going about writing, say, horror? You say to treat it by not labeling it and just go with the flow, yes? But if my natural tendency to write darker themes goes into the direction of supernatural/fantasy or angst, how would I even direct that natural flow without forcing it?? I have to admit, I have watched about ten, maybe less, horror movies in my entire life... Does this Q even make sense to anyone but me? LOL

It makes sense to me. And the answer I have to give you is a simple one: Plan.
Seriously, even if you're not a planner. Build an outline, create more detailed plans (step by step through EVERYTHING that shows up in that chapter or story, walk yourself through it minute by minute), and then write your story based off that Write Out. You can overthink it and go crazy making it completely random in the planning stages, and then follow those while you create your actual story. It takes the brain work out of it, and it makes it easier to do what you need to do: write.

Hmmm I see. I wonder if it will feel forced when it is not a genre I enjoy... But it is worth a shot!!! Halloween, I'm coming for you this year!!!!
But... here's another Q then... what is considered 'horror'? I'm not even sure what that would consist of. Say, an abandoned house, two friends get stuck in it, something is inside trying to kill them... would that be 'horror' or does that fall under the supernatural instead?

That would be supernatural horror. This is why I don't like labels. Ignore them. Just write. Labels don't matter for anything. Really.

lol okay. I will just ignore them then. The labels do all confuse me, it's... just... a story!!!

For me horror unless is a slasher type thing should be thought of as suspence. When I plan for one I go about it like a murder mystery. I ask myself questions like Do they come to it or does it come to them. How did they come across it "whatever is trying plaguing them" It "it" malevent, misunderstood, being controlled ect? How many people are going to die?

-takes notes- I want to be able to write a horror story that gets one attached to the characters and the relationships between them before yanking them away one by one, throwing fear, loss and terror into one giant hydraulic typhoon and hauling it at the reader hard enough to cause actual heartache and suspense.
....does this make sense as a goal?
