Everybody has their own writing method. So, now I'm asking this: what part of your writing process is essential?
I can't write without doing a Write Out, where I walk myself through everything in the chapter. Even if I opt to remove elements later, it's a lifesaver.

I can't skip my layout. Since most of my stories are chaptered I like to figure out major points before I get started as well as character layouts and other details. I can't start a story with out doing that.

I'm kind of wondering what all writing methods everyone uses now. *laughs*

Zoni annnnnnnnnnd now I feel like even more of a newbie. LOL. I have never heard of a Write Out. I cannot skip my Outline. For chaptered stories I have a really in-depth, chapter by chapter, scene by scene outline. For oneshots I have a more basic sketch but I often start oneshots by writing the ending first. 0.o Which suddenly makes me wonder if I am the only one who does that...

I don't do scene by scene but if a idea sticks out enough I'll write the scene out so the initial idea doesn't get lost in the rest of the ideas.
Lol I've heard of a write out. I can't do them but my friend does.

Write out is a term I coined for my writing tutorials that I released a few years ago. I'm kind of amused that somebody HAS heard of them.

I always want to know what the characters are going to look like from the start. But I don't really have anything set in stone that do for each story. I will jot down the basic idea and who I would want to play (or roll for people), and then if it's going to be something big, I will try to research the crap out of it so I know I'm not botching something. Sometimes I will write down a few ideas that I want to happen along the way, and the main plot for the story, but mostly I just try to think of a starting point and then see where the characters take me. For some reason, mine seem to have a mind of their own and take me places I wouldn't even have thought lol.
Oneshots (or sometimes they end up a few chapters long lol), is usually a plot bunny that I would like to see happen. I always grow attached to the characters I am writing, so I always want to keep doing, and my brain finds ways, so I need to work on knowing when to stop or just go with it and create a big plot. That's what happened in one of my oneshots. It turned into a two-shot, which wasn't bad, but then my brain was like, but then you could do this and this and this........and about 70 some chapters later (or 3 sagas later), I am still doing stuff to the story. It turned into something I had no idea I could do and I will have to say it might not be the best written (since its been going on for about two years), but it's the biggest story I have ever done.
So, I am not sure what to call my writing method though lol.

frootloops101 WOW. 0.0 I am quite the opposite. I struggle with longer stories... I have lots of ideas but once I settle on one, I tend to write oneshots. Out of all of my stories probably half of them are oneshots!! And my chaptered stories rarely go over 20 chapters, typically around the 10-15 mark. I do let my characters lead, though... there have been SOOOO many times that my outline has to be re-written into an entirely new direction halfway through the story, all because the characters took on life of their own. That's actually what I'm struggling with as of now... I'm 20 chapters in and the characters re-wrote it. >.< asdfghjkl

tigress that's the fun of have a well thought out character. Some of my favorite ideas were runaway trains when the characters prompted a new direction.

kaseyslove lol yeah... I have only had one story ever stick EXACTLY to the outline and it came out a little... bland. >.< So I let them run as they will... and just try to direct it back to my ending one way or another. Sometimes they go a totally different route, though. The Breaking was supposed to end with an escape over the fence and out of the country, but when the characters got there and I was writing it, I realized that how I had built them would make it impossible for them to condone leaving others behind. So it went several more chapters from there to go back and fight. >.<

That's makes sence. I was plotting a future story about a boy who ends up with a familiar. It was suspoes to be a fun little cheeky story but then I changed it for ukiss to teen top and the plot went for simple to complicated in seconds the moment I started developing characters. Can't say I'm not happy with it now though.

kaseyslove oh yeah, that story of mine was so frustrating at the time but I'm pretty happy with it now that it's over. LOL. I kind of like when plots remake themselves into something so much more complex/deeper <3

I like it too but then I'll hate it because I have to make a check list to make sure that what ever queation can be asked has an answer. I don't like potholes -_-
